The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee tasked with establishing the National Health Facility Regulatory Agency (NHFRA) to enhance healthcare standards across the country.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Tunji Alausa, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja, stated that the NHFRA would play a critical role in the government’s efforts to ensure that all healthcare facilities operate at exemplary standards.
Alausa said that the establishment of the committee is a testament to the Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to a healthcare system that is safe, efficient, and equitable.
Citing successful international models like the United Kingdom’s Care Quality Commission and the US Joint Commission, Alausa highlighted the importance of effective regulation in improving patient care, stressing that healthcare regulation is about fostering continuous improvement and excellence.
The minister urged the committee to ensure that NHFRA sets a high standard for healthcare regulation in Nigeria and the region. The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Daju Kachallom, represented by Dr Dogara Okaro, underscored the importance of a well-regulated healthcare environment.
“The committee’s work is crucial in laying the foundation for a pivotal institution in our health sector,” she said. The Permanent Secretary for Health in the FCT, Dr Adedolapo Fashola, commended the initiative and expressed confidence that it will improve healthcare outcomes and accountability.
The committee, chaired by Dr Richard Ajayi, includes experts from various health sectors and is tasked with creating the governance structure, legislative framework, and NHFRA operational guidelines.
