Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, are expected back at their duty posts by 8 a.m. on Wednesday following the suspension of the nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the President of the UCH chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Dr. Uthman Adedeji, told the News Agency of Nigeria that members would fully comply with the national directive to resume work.
NARD had earlier embarked on an indefinite strike over what it described as the federal government’s failure to address long standing demands. These included the reversal of the revised professional allowance, payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, and the release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).
According to Adedeji, the strike was suspended after an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting, during which the federal government agreed to reverse its position on the contentious professional allowance and committed to addressing other unresolved issues.
He noted that while services would resume on Wednesday morning, no new patients would be admitted before then. Doctors, he said, would use the interval to hand over patients currently on admission to consultants, ensuring continuity of care.
Stable patients will be discharged, and emergency cases will not be accepted until full services resume. However, Adedeji added that doctors may be permitted to continue managing critically ill patients beyond the handover period, subject to approval from the association’s leadership.
He reaffirmed the association’s dedication to patient welfare and urged the federal government to act swiftly on NARD’s demands to prevent further disruptions in the health sector.
