Worried by the increasing number of deaths in Kano State, the Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, has urged the state government to re-open health facilities in the state.
Dr. Ihekweazu, who raised the concern in Kano yesterday, insisted that a densely-populated state like Kano could not afford to shut virtually all tertiary health institutions against patients suffering from other ailments than the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The NCDC boss stressed that continued shutting of hospitals for other critical uses might pave way for other casualties yet unknown. He urged Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to compel at least three health facilities to open for treatment of patients aside the dedicated ones for COVID-19.
Major tertiary health facilities, including Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and other state-owned institutions, have stopped receiving regular patients since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the state.
