Pharmacists Declare War!” – PSN Lagos Blasts NMA Over Consultant Cadre Rejection

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Lagos Chapter, has fired back at the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in a fiery showdown that’s shaking the foundations of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

In a scathing press release, PSN Lagos accused NMA of “monarchical arrogance” and “medical elitism” following the latter’s rejection of the Consultant Pharmacist Cadre—a federally approved initiative aimed at elevating pharmacy practice in Nigeria.

“This is a declaration of war,” said Pharm. Babayemi Oyekunle, PSN Lagos Chairman. “The NMA’s threats and hostility will be met with equal force.”

The NMA Lagos had issued a memo demanding the reversal of Consultant Pharmacist appointments in federal institutions and threatened industrial action. But PSN insists the cadre is backed by federal circulars dating as far back as 2011, reaffirmed multiple times through 2023.

PSN cited international best practices from the UK, USA, Canada, and even Ghana and Sierra Leone, where consultant pharmacists are recognized for improving patient safety and interdisciplinary care.

“It’s delusional to think only doctors should specialize,” PSN stated. “This messianic complex must end.”

PSN also accused the Lagos State Ministry of Health of manipulating policy to sideline pharmacists—changing titles from “Consultant” to “Specialist” and proposing only medical personnel to head the state’s Drug Management Agency.

“If the government caves to NMA theatrics, we’ll unleash a full coalition of health professionals,” warned Oyekunle.

As tensions rise, PSN Lagos vows to defend its members and uphold professionalism, equity, and lawful healthcare administration.
