Silent Struggles: Interns at FMC Makurdi Allegedly Underpaid Despite Federal Wage Approval

Posted on: Sun 27-07-2025

MedicalWorld Nigeria has received an anonymous report from a concerned intern at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, highlighting a troubling issue regarding the remuneration of health interns.

“Despite the federal approval of the revised minimum wage for health interns, we at FMC Makurdi are currently being underpaid. The expected remuneration falls within the range of 220,000 to 230,000naira, yet we are being paid 161,000naira monthly,” the intern wrote.

According to the report, this discrepancy has persisted without any formal explanation from the hospital’s management. The intern claims that while colleagues in other federal institutions receive the full approved amount, interns at FMC Makurdi are left struggling.

“There has been no protest, largely due to fear of victimisation or non-renewal of internship placements. Many of us are struggling silently,” the writer added.

The intern reached out to MedicalWorld Nigeria in hopes that our platform would help spotlight what they described as a “silent injustice” and demand accountability from the relevant authorities.

“Given your commendable investigations into malpractice and exploitation of healthcare workers nationwide, I believe this issue at FMC Makurdi deserves urgent attention,” the message concluded.
