Project Overview
SANHDEF has been engaged by the Gates Foundation (GF) to implement a three (3) year Health System Strengthening (HSS) Project in Kano State. The project will support the State in developing realistic plans to optimize its health systems, improve health outcomes, and build a more resilient healthcare infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of its growing population.
Job Summary
- The Technical Officer (TO) will provide crucial support for implementing the Primary Health Care (PHC) strengthening initiative in Kano State.
- The Officer will work closely with sub-national stakeholders to enhance coordination, service delivery, and overall health system performance in alignment with national priorities, including the National Strategic Health Reform Initiative II (NSHRII).
- This role requires a strong understanding of the Kano health landscape, PHC delivery systems, and government engagement dynamics.
- The Officer will collaborate closely with the State Project Lead and the broader team to ensure the successful execution and oversight of all PHC strengthening activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical support to Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, LGHA teams and Primary Health Care facilities in project implementation
- Provide technical support to the State’s SWAp coordination office focusing on driving the State's compliance and achievement of Project HOPE Disbursement Linked Results.
- Support the diagnostics of system gaps and contribute to the development of realistic, sustainable plans through AOPs and MTSS
- Support the strengthening of PHC workforce capacity and local health system governance
- Maintain strong engagement with Kano State Ministry of Health, State Primary Health Care Management Board, LGHAs, and partners
- Support the collection, analysis, and reporting of data to track progress and inform decision-making.
- Facilitate monitoring visits, coordination meetings, and performance reviews
- Identify risks and support mitigation measures to ensure smooth project delivery
- Contribute to knowledge sharing — success stories, lessons learned, and technical briefs.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Public Health, Health Sciences, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in PHC program implementation in Nigeria
- Proven experience working on donor-funded projects or in NGO settings.
- Strong background in data management, statistical analysis, and research methodologies
Desired Competencies:
- Demonstrated understanding of primary health care programming.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, STATA, R).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex program information clearly and effectively.
- Proven ability to engage and manage relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in working with international donor organizations, government agencies, and NGOs.
- Skilled in using digital health tools and data management systems, with experience in leveraging technology to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a dynamic environment, demonstrating flexibility in responding to new challenges and opportunities.
- Familiarity with the health landscape in Nigeria, particularly in Kano State.
Travel Requirements
- Willingness to travel frequently within Kano State and occasionally outside the state (up to 40%).
