Trillion-Naira Scandal? Reps Vow to Expose States That Allegedly Diverted Palliative Funds — What You Need to Know!

In a stunning revelation, the House of Representatives Committee on NG-CARES has announced plans to name and shame states accused of diverting or mismanaging over 1.06 trillion naira in palliative funds meant to cushion the effects of Nigeria’s economic reforms.

Committee Chairman, Hon. Abubakar Yahaya Kusada, disclosed that despite massive investments by the Federal Government — backed by World Bank credit — many Nigerians are still not feeling the impact of the NG-CARES programme.

“The government has kept its promise. The money was released. But where did it go?” Kusada asked.

Where Did 1.06 Trillion Naira Go?

The NG-CARES initiative was designed to provide relief following:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic
  • Fuel subsidy removal
  • Exchange rate unification

Yet, despite the release of the 4th and final tranche, the suffering continues. The committee suspects:

  • Diversion of funds
  • Fake beneficiaries
  • Inflated contracts
  • Compromised procurement processes

The House Committee is launching a full-scale investigation to uncover:

  • Whether states misappropriated funds
  • If fake names were used to claim social transfers
  • Why some states received more than their fair share
  • Whether MSME grants actually reached small businesses

Kusada warned that if states cannot verify their claims, they will be publicly exposed. “We will tell Nigerians where to find the palliatives — or who to hold responsible if they were stolen,” he said.

This isn’t just about accountability. It’s about restoring trust and ensuring that vulnerable Nigerians get the support they desperately need.

“If the funds were properly used, let the people know. If not, let those responsible be held accountable,” Kusada declared.
