In a vibrant display of commitment and community spirit, the School of Nursing, University of Benin Teaching Hospital International Alumni Association (SONUBTHAI) held a remarkable fundraising gala in Atlanta, Georgia, aimed at advancing nursing education in Nigeria. The event brought together a diverse audience of alumni, healthcare professionals, and dignitaries from across the globe to support the growth and future of their alma mater.

A Vision for the Future of Nursing

With the theme “The Future of the Nursing Profession at UBTH & UBTH College of Nursing Moving Forward,” the gala served not only as a fundraiser but also as a rallying call for sustained investment in healthcare education. Held as part of the association’s biennial convention and gala night, the event underscored the vital role that nursing education plays in building a resilient and responsive healthcare system in Nigeria.

SONUBTHAI International President, Philomena Kerobo, welcomed guests with heartfelt appreciation and reaffirmed the association’s dedication to elevating nursing standards back home.

“It’s a great honour and privilege to welcome you all to our Biennial Fundraiser Convention and Gala Night,” she said.
“We’ve made significant strides, but our work is far from over.”

Kerobo’s message was one of unity, progress, and an enduring commitment to transforming nursing education through alumni-led initiatives.

Bridging Borders for a Shared Cause

In a show of solidarity and support, the keynote speaker and current Provost of the UBTH College of Nursing Sciences, Mrs. Abieyuwa Eweka, made the journey from Nigeria to attend the event in person. Her presence was warmly received and celebrated as a powerful symbol of dedication to the shared goal of uplifting nursing education.

“We are deeply grateful, Ma,” Kerobo said in appreciation, acknowledging the significance of the Provost’s attendance.

Also present was the President of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses in North America (NANNNA), Ms. Mercy Ekpoudom, who lauded SONUBTHAI’s relentless efforts in supporting the development of their former institution. She commended the group’s tangible contributions toward empowering students, enhancing infrastructure, and raising academic standards.

Investing in the Next Generation

The night’s fundraising efforts were focused on key areas essential to the future of the UBTH College of Nursing Sciences. These included upgrading outdated facilities, expanding learning resources, and increasing access to opportunities for nursing students in Edo State.

Organizers noted that proceeds from the event would be channeled toward the expansion of educational infrastructure, modernization of teaching tools, and the provision of scholarships and grants for deserving students. This commitment, they said, is part of a broader vision to ensure the UBTH College of Nursing remains a leading institution for nursing education in Nigeria.

A Night of Purpose and Pride

Beyond its philanthropic goal, the Atlanta gala also served as a reunion and celebration of shared identity and purpose. Alumni reconnected with old friends, shared stories, and reflected on the impact their education at UBTH has had on their lives and careers.

As the night came to a close, the atmosphere was filled with optimism, pride, and a renewed determination to give back. The SONUBTHAI fundraising gala not only raised funds—it rekindled a global network of support committed to shaping a stronger future for nursing in Nigeria.

In a time when the healthcare sector in Nigeria faces mounting challenges, efforts such as these stand out as a testament to the power of diaspora engagement and alumni solidarity.
