Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), yesterday, inaugurated a 15-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) situated at university’s tertiary health facility for patients seeking emergency medical services in Edo State and the South South region.

The management of the health facility also pledged to carry out free cancer screening for a month as part of activities to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The CMD announced that part of events slated to mark its 50th anniversary, among others, is free training for first responders on basic life support, free cancer screening, executive screening and subsidised surgeries.

Speaking at the launch of the ICU unit in Benin City, Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, said the project was part of the Nigeria LNG hospital support programme geared towards ameliorating healthcare challenges of patients in critical conditions.

Obaseki, who said the initiative was as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with NLNG, noted that it would complement the existing seven-bed ICU and cater for the hospital’s growing numbers of patients.

Philip Mshelbila, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria LNG Limited, said the hospital support programme was conceived on the back of COVID-19 pandemic to assuage the envisaged pressure that medical institutions would experience in managing patients.

Mshelbila, who was represented by Andy Odeh, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, NLNG, said the approved cost was $500,000 per location and a total cost of $6m for the entire programme.
