ABU Disowns Health Worker Posing As Medical Doctor

Posted on: Mon 15-06-2015

The Faculty of Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has disowned one Martin Ugwu, who is working with the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, as a Senior Medical Officer.

Ugwu, a Senior Medical Officer II on Grade Level 13, reportedly impersonated his friend, Dr. George Daniel, who was undergoing a residency training programme in Jos, Plateau State.

He allegedly stole the licence from his friend for whom he was the best man during his wedding in 2006.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria had in a letter to the Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Abuja, signed by the Registrar, Dr. A. Ibrahim, described Ugwu as an imposter, adding that the case had been reported to the police for further investigation and action.

ABU, in a letter dated June 5, 2015 and addressed to the FCSC, confirmed that the real George Daniel graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in May, 2002.

The institution’s letter, which was signed by the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. A. G. Bakari, was in response to a request for confirmation of Ugwu’s claim that he was a medical graduate of ABU.

It reads in part, “This is to confirm that George Daniel Davidson who was born on June 25, 1971, graduated with an MB, BS degree from this university in May, 2002.”

Following investigation by the MDCN which found that Ugwu was an imposter posing as a medical doctor, the FCSC Chairman, Deaconess Joan Ayo, had written to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, asking him to hand over the suspect to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

The suspect was said to have caused a stir at the health ministry last week when he led some policemen to arrest senior officials whom he accused of masterminding his ordeal.

A source said his plot to embarrass the officials failed as ministry workers prevented them from being taken away when the policemen could not produce an arrest warrant.

“When the policemen could not produce an arrest warrant for the senior officials, we suspected that they must be acting a script by Ugwu to embarrass the people he suspected to have masterminded his ordeal, so the policemen were prevented from taking the officials away,” the source said.

When contacted on Sunday, the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer, Anjuri Manzah, said the police were investigating Ugwu for impersonation, noting that the case was being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department.

“The case has been transferred from Apo Police Division to the CID and investigation is continuing,” he stated.
