The African Development Bank, AfDB, has donated health equipment worth N290, 000 to the federal government. The kits were originally meant to help combat Ebola virus disease in the country. Even though Ebola was promptly contained by the government while it lasted in 2014, the donor believes they could be deployed to other areas of the nation’s health systems to help boost health care services, a statement made available to National Mirror recently by Director of Media and Publicity in the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Boade Akinola, said. The release noted that World Health Organization (WHO) procured the equipment with fund from AfDB. Country Director, WHO Dr.Rui Gama Vaz confirmed in the release that the equipment was initially to curtail the spread of Ebola epidemic, but that since the country had succeeded in curtailing Ebola, the equipment could be used to address other epidemic .
Country Director, AfDB Ousmane Dore, commended the government the way it handled Ebola epidemic in the country. “We would like, on behalf of President, AfDB to express to you our sincere commendation for the way in which Nigerian government was able to arrest the spread of the Ebola disease for which the bank had earmarked some resources to help you in the fight”, he was quoted as saying in the release. He added that the quick response by government led international communities to be assured that the political will and determination of the government in the fight against Ebola was serious. The release maintained that the Minister of Health, Prof.Isaac Adewole, who according to the release received the donation, said that the equipment would help the country prepare against any future eventuality. “We thank you very sincerely and we need more, this is just the beginning. The whole world must be prepared for eventualities as global warming is bringing quite a number of challenges in the health sector. Yesterday was Lassa, day before yesterday was Ebola. Today and tomorrow is Zika, and we don’t know what would happen tomorrow and thereafter. “The most important thing is that we must be prepare at all time. These would help us to stay prepared and we still look forward to support our laboratories facilities and build the human system that would make the country ready for any epidemic,” the release said. Items received include two ambulances, 30 Bajaj motorcycles, 34 safety boxes and among others, according to the release
