The Association of Fertility and Reproductive Health has warned that smoking and excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks by men can reduce their chances of impregnating women.

The National Treasurer of the association, Prof. John Ikimalo, who issued this warning ahead of the AFRH annual conference in Port Harcourt, River State, said that smoking and heavy drinking could adversely affect the performance of a man's sperm.

Ikimalo said," Alcohol can reduce a man's libido. A lot of men that have issues ask if there is any special diet that can improve their sperm function. Scientifically, there are few drugs that can help boost a man's sperm function.

"Smoking and alcohol can reduce the chances of impregnating a woman. Simply put, excessive smoking can adversely affect men's sperm performance."

Ikimalo said the theme of the forthcoming conference, `Recent Advances in Assisted Reproductive Technology', was chosen to show participants that a lot had been achieved in terms of technological advancement in the area of IVF in the past two decades.
