Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has said his administration will strengthen the three tiers of medical care in the state. He stated that it was his wish that primary health care centres, general hospitals and teaching hospitals would play complementary roles to one another.
The governor said the Niobn he promised for upgrading health facilities in the state during a town hall meeting in Badagry would soon be ready to enable the state to procure critical modern medical equipment. Ambode, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olatunji Bello, spoke during the inauguration of the new Critical Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja and added that the Nrobn would complement ongoing efforts at increasing bed spaces in the health facilities at the grass roots level.
"The three tiers of medical care will continue to receive our attention in order to have a healthy population that will be in position to create wealth for our state. Let me assure you that our administration will continue to be motivated to make live more livable and comfortable for the residents." Reversing the trend of overseas medical tourism in favour of local medical tourism through the provision of the right and conducive atmosphere for qualitative medicare in the state. "Our Government is committed to the establishment of a world-class medical park on the site of the old School of Nursing in Ikoyi. We are determined to deliver this through a public-private partnership," he said.
He said the new CCU would complement the capacity of the existing Intensive Care Unit established over ro years ago, adding that the combined capacities of the two facilities would enhance the status of LASUTH. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said the Ambode's administration had committed enormous resources to the health sector for the provision of qualitative health care delivery to the people.
He, therefore, enjoined the workers of the CCU to work as a team to take good care of patients and maintain the world-class medical equipment. The Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Wale Oke, said the CCU and the ICU were special departments that cater to patients with severe and life threatening illnesses and iniuries which required constant support from specialists to ensure normal function of the body.
