The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said he is committed to bringing quality health care service closer to the people, particularly during emergency situations.
The governor spoke on Monday after inaugurating 20 mobile intensive care unit ambulances and 26 transport ambulances at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
He stated that the inauguration of the ambulances, which would be used free of charge by Lagosians, was part of his pledge to run a government that would leave no one behind.
“We are committed to running a government that will leave no one behind; a government that will implement programmes that make life easier for our people. Today, we are inaugurating the free ambulance service as a fulfilment of that pledge.
“In the past 16 years, we have witnessed great strides in the health sector; commencing from the foundational leaps of Bola Tinubu to the significant landmarks of Babatunde Fashola,” the governor said.
Ambode added that the government would station the 26 transport ambulances at the 26 general hospitals in the state. He stated that his administration had restructured the state emergency ambulance services and increased the fleet of new mobile intensive care units by 20, bringing the total number to 33 units.
He said, “We have restructured the ambulance services and increased the fleet of new mobile intensive care units by 20, bringing the total number to 33 MICUs. This will widen the coverage of our services beyond the metropolis to the hinterland within the state. In total, we are inaugurating 46 new ambulances today.”
The governor added that he had given approval for the recruitment of more paramedic workers and special medical coordinators to ensure 24 hours service to the citizens.
He said he would upgrade the general hospitals in the state and embark on the construction of a medical park.
“All our general hospitals will now have new mobile X-ray machines to reduce the cost of patients doing X-ray outside the hospitals. Equipment is on the way”, he added.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Modele Osunkiyesi, said the acquisition of the ambulances was a product of the stakeholders meeting with the governor.
In a related development, the Lagos State Government has handed over 10 new Hilux vehicles and 15 motorcycles to the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, to ensure a crime-free state.
The state Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, who handed over the vehicles to the police, charged them to utilise the vehicles to enhance security of lives and property in the state.
Owoseni assured the government that the vehicles would be used for crime prevention.
