Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, President of Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Mr. Jim Ovia, Founder/Chairman, Zenith Bank Plc, yesterday, led other dignitaries to raise funds for the purchase of four Mobile Cancer Centres, MCC, for Lagos State. This came as Ambode called on well-meaning Nigerians to combat the dreaded cancer scourge in Lagos in particular and Nigeria in general.
The fund raising was part of activities to mark 53rd birthday of the governor dedicated to the support of the cause of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, CECP, Centurion, held at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja.
Other dignitaries include: Mr. Peter Amangbo; Publisher, Guardian Newspapers, Maiden Alex Ibru; Dr. Christopher Kolade; Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, General Manager/ Editor-in-Chief, Vanguard Newspapers; Dr. Michael Omolayole; Chief Kessington Adebutu; Chairman of Eleganza Group, Chief Rasaq Okoya; former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Niyi Adebayo; Retd Justice Adesola Oguntade; former Minister of Industry and President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Nike Akande; Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye; Mr. Gbenga Oyebode; captains of industries, members of Diplomatic Corps, among others. Ambode at the event tagged; #GivingTuesday, said that the fund raising to procure the MCCs was the first step towards winning the fight against cancer. Lamenting the rate at which the terminal disease has claimed thousands of lives in recent times, the Governor said it was unacceptable and therefore called for concerted efforts from all and sundry.
The governor noted that the facilities would be deployed to the three senatorial districts to fight cancer in Lagos State. Governor Ambode was later decorated as the State Patron of CECP by the organisation’s Convener, Mrs. Adetutu Adeleke. Earlier, a Board member of CECP, Mrs. Maiden Ibru stated that combating the cancer scourge should be a concern to all including private and corporate individuals.
She lamented that 240 persons died daily from preventable cancer adding that the funds have been raised for the first set of the 37 MCC for the 36 states including Federal Capital Territory, FCT. Also, anchor of CECP-Nigeria, Kolade, urged other governors to follow suit in the fight against cancer in Nigeria.
