The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) received with sadness and shock, the unfortunate news of the collapse of a church building in Uyo- Akwa Ibom State with several lives reported to have been lost and many others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
AMLSN sympathizes with the government and people of Akwa Ibom State over this monumental tragedy and pray that this does not recur, not only in Akwa Ibom State, but also in other parts of Nigeria and the world at large.
It is really unfortunate that the disaster occurred as our country is battling with too many loss of lives due to insurgency and other ills in recent times.
We hereby direct our members in Uyo and environs to as a matter of urgency, mobilize safe blood and blood products in adequate quantity as this is one of the essential needs in times like this.
AMLSN also calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen professional regulatory bodies in Nigeria to enable them perform their regulatory duties effectively. AMLSN wishes to call on the Council of Registered Engineers (COREN) and other relevant regulatory bodies, not to treat this incident and other cases of collapsed buildings with kid gloves. Also, there is an urgent need to identify and prosecute quacks who might have infiltrated their noble professions and are rendering substandard services to Nigerians. Quackery is everywhere and must be curtailed.
We commend the efforts of the Akwa Ibom State government for seeing to the need for proper investigation of the fatal and regrettable incident. We also commend them for pledging to pay for the treatment of all the wounded.
Your Excellency and the people of Akwa State, please accept our condolences while we wish the injured rapid recovery.
