As part of efforts to combat blood cancers and sickle cell anemia in Nigeria, Ara, a non-profit making organisation, in collaboration with the Bone Marrow Registry in Nigeria (BMRN) and Delete Blood Cancer, will on December 21 launch a programme to recruit the first 2,000 bone marrow donors in Lagos.
The launch, which will feature stalls where potential donors can learn about bone marrow donation process, will also have booths to register persons who are willing to become bone marrow donors and ready to save lives.
According to a founding member of the organisation, Ronke Babalakin, Ara will not limit its interest to the donors alone, but would as well want young people to show interest and invest in the health challenge.
“Not everyone in the Ara community will be bone marrow donors; instead, we want the people to be open to learn more about blood cancer related diseases and how we can fight them effectively. “Ara’s initial goal was to recruit 30,000 bone marrow donors on the African bone marrow registries by December 2018. That is why, during this launch, we are offering everyone the opportunity to come, eat and connect with the people and learn how to save lives,” she added.
She continued: “In particular, we want to support cancer and sickle cell patients, survivors, and families by connecting them with a community to which they can direct their concerns and queries to, and eradicate the stigma that surrounds cancer and bone marrow donation in many African cities, including Lagos. Ara’s long-term goal is to provide the logistics and infrastructure necessary to ensure the seamless recruitment of donors in cities all over Africa.”
The launch will be held at The NBA Building, 1261 Adeola Hopwell, Victoria Island, by 9a.m.
