The President of the Association of Medical Officers of Health in Nigeria (AMOHN) Dr. Segun Ayodele, has urged the stakeholders, including government, to build alliances for the sake of repositioning the country’s primary health care.

 

He said that is towards improving the health of the people. Ayodele said this during the annual scientific conference held yesterday in Lagos. He said that primary health care facilities lack adequate technical manpower, infrastructural facilities and the ones available are largely dilapidated.

 

He said the purpose of the conference was to highlight the pivotal role of Primary Health Care in the nation’s health care delivery system and the challenges of PHC in Nigeria.

 

Since the inauguration of national health insurance service in Nigeria in 2015, the scheme has only covered about 4.2 per cent of the citizenry.

 

He further said that the recent Ebola outbreak and response in Nigeria underscores the concept of primary health care. He said: “The Medical Officers of health of the two states, Lagos and River states where the outbreak occurred played significant roles in the response both in the crisis phase and sustenance phase of the campaign.
