As Nigeria joins sister nations in commemorating the African Vaccination Week (AVW), Nigerians will have to wait a little longer for the free and easy access to hepatitis vaccine as its high cost has stalled its inclusion in Nigeria’s routine immunisation programme.
The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Dr. Ado Muhammad revealed this, yesterday, in Abuja during the event with the theme; “Close the immunisation gap. Stay polio free.”
He said vaccines abound for adults such as meningitis vaccine and Human Papilloma Vaccine which is used for women in the prevention of cervical cancer, even though most of the packages are for children below the age of five. He however said there are strategies that have been put in place to ensure that more packages are included. ”There are vaccines for adults for hepatitis but those vaccines are extremely expensive and we have not yet included them as part of routine immunisation for Nigeria. We are working on the procedures of making that happen. So people need to know that the vaccines are extremely expensive.”
“But we provide vaccines for our children and these vaccines are available in private and government hospitals and the government is working to ensure that we include it as part of our routine immunisation as soon as the funds are available.
“There are some packages that adults will benefit from and are benefitting from. They include meningitis vaccine, human papilloma vaccine which is meant for women in the fight against cervical cancer.
