Cancer has been discovered to be the commonest killer disease at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, from 2012 to date, based on records at the mortuary.
UCH's Chief Medical Di-rector (CMD) Prof. Temitope Alonge, who spoke yesterday at the inauguration of a spe-cial diagnostic centre donat-ed to the hospital by Alhaji Nurudeen Oluwasola, said:
"In evaluating the causes of death, we discovered that cancer- related death was be-coming rampant. So, we vis-ited the oldest cancer institute in the world to find out how they managed to sustain their excellence and offer cancer care in 100 years and we dis-covered that they have a re-search centre that gives result back to the clinical section to let them know the pattern of the cancer and treatment mo-dality that should be targeted.

"Before now, we had treat-ment carried out in hospitals and they tell you this is the treatment modality for a par-ticular disease. However, we know that not one cancer is the same with another." He said the new diagnos-tic centre would define the character and attitude of the cancer, adding that the kind of treatment that could work and the treatment that could not work would be specified.
According to the UCH boss, "this centre can now tar-get treatment of every cancer and it is an individualistic approach to cancer care."
Alonge went on: "In the healthcare delivery model, the aim is to have patients who havegone to hospital, better treated, comfortable with the treatment given to them and are coming out hap-py and smiling. This centre allows us better diagnosis targeted at a particular treat-ment of a disease rather than giving general treatment ap-proach To a disease.
