A consultant cardiologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Dr. Casmir Amadi has advocated the need to intensify the control and prevention of hypertension in Nigeria saying the disease is now the leading cause of stroke, the number one cardiovascular killer in the country.
Speaking during a scientific symposium on cardiovascular disease organized in Lagos recently by a food company, Nigeria, Kraft Heinz Company, Dr. Amadi revealed that the incidence of cardiovascular disease is increasing in Nigeria.
“Cardiovascular disease is a serious issue afflicting many people now. In LUTH where I work, you would hardly do a call without taking in a stroke case or heart failure”, he said. According to him, about 28.9% of Nigerians are hypertensive and at risk of death from stroke, heart failure or kidney disease. It is with regard to this issue that Kraft Heinz Company has introduced COMPLAN as a nutritional support for management of hypertension, Vincent Egbe, Kraft Heinz, country manager for West and Central Africa, explained.
He said the symposium is aimed at educating health care professionals on the impending epidemic of cardiovascular diseases and how Complan can be of benefit as an adjunct in the management of cardiovascular diseases.
“The incidence of cardiovascular disease has been on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa with Nigeria being the most populous country in the region. This implies that a significant number of persons may be at risk of fatal outcomes of cardiovascular diseases if not well managed or prevented altogether.
