Three persons were yesterday confirmed dead in Ndiogbu Ndieze village, Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State and 17 others hospitalised following another attack of cholera in the state.
Two days ago, the disease had claimed five lives in Ikwo local government area of the state.
Those hospitalized are currently receiving treatment at the Sudan United Mission Hospital and Iboko General Hospital located in the local government.
The state’s Epidemiologist, Dr. Francis Onwe and other officials of the state Ministry of Health yesterday visited the area following the deaths and distributed drugs that included oral rehydration solutions, sanitizers for water purification and chloroquine to the residents to stem the epidemic.
A resident of Ndiogbu Ndieze village, Chief Austin Igwe Edeze, whose younger brother died from the disease, said mourners who attended the burial of a victim came back vomiting and defecating uncontrollably.
Chief Edeze narrated how his brother died: “Nobody suspected that cholera was responsible for the protracted vomiting and defecation by those who attended the burial. Our brother was vomiting and stooling and we took him to the hospital where he died early in the morning.
“We raised an alarm to the Ministry of Health and the officials advised that we should quickly bury him to avoid the disease spreading to other people around, which we did immediately.”
Dr Onwe advised the people of the state to ensure personal and environmental hygiene to avoid contracting the disease.
He also warned them to desist from drinking stream and contaminated waters which, he explained, are sources of contracting cholera.
The death toll from the cholera scourge in the state has risen to 30 since the outbreak in February this year.
