A parish of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David, Lagos State, has inaugurated a dialysis centre and dental unit to promote wellness among the public.
The facilities were inaugurated under the church’s Healing Stripes Hospital.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jemilade Longe, noted that the intervention would boost access to dialysis among renal patients in the state.
Lauding the initiative, Ambode said both the government and private support were needed to tackle the health challenges in the country.
In his address, the Chief Medical Director, Healing Stripes Hospital, Dr. Ezinne Onyemere, noted that services at the centres would be provided at a subsidised rate.
According to him, the hospital, which was established in 2010, has attended to over 13,000 patients and provided free service to 5,482 people through the church’s welfare programme.
She said, “The Healing Stripes Cancer Screening Centre, Surulere, an offshoot of The Healing Stripes Hospital, was established in June 2011 as the first faith-based Cancer Screening Centre for free screening and awareness. The Centre has done free cancer screening and therapy for more than 17, 542 people in Lagos State.
“Statistics show that 30 million Nigerians are suffering from kidney disease. However, only 200 machines are available to serve them, far below the requirement of 12,000 machines.
“The expansion of the dialysis centre makes a contribution of filling the gap. Our dialysis centre has conducted 2,092 subsidised dialysis sessions and 102 free sessions. The centre has also successfully conducted five kidney transplants in partnership with some hospitals in India.”
