To stem the incessant strikes in government-owned hospitals, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Professor Abduwaheed Olatinwo, has canvassed an all-inclusive meeting involving workers and representatives of the government to regularly discuss issues of interest.
Olatinwo, while reacting to the ongoing industrial action by Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and sus-pension of the one embarked on by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), told The Guardian in Ilorin that previous meetings between government repre-sentatives and concerned health workers had yielded no positive results.
According to him, "there should be a way of dis-cussing with all the stake-holders in the health sector. I mean we should call every-body together to determine whether they are ready to abide by the rules of the job or not. "The present system where doctors, pharmacists, nurses and so on are addressed separately is not healthy for the system. For instance, if you solve the problems of the doctors today, the nurs-es will present theirs tomor-row. So, it is better we are all called together and discuss the health sector issues as a family because the issue of healthcare system is holis-tic."
The CMD, who believed that strike remains part of workers' right however, urged health workers in the country to always make industrial the last option "due to their essential serv-ices."
