The Department of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos inducted fifty Physiotherapists on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the Old Great Hall of the College.
The historic event witnessed the presentation of Special Award for Distinguished Leadership to the Provost, Professor F. T. Ogunsola from the Department of Physiotherapy was presented by Prof. R. A. Arogundade, the immediate past President, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
In her remark, Professor F. T. Ogunsola enjoined the newly inducted Physiotherapists to face the reality of the time and the real world by becoming confident that their future is not bleak because they have been trained to be change agents. She urged them to be active heroes in their disciplines; adding that Physiotherapy is one of the most rapidly developing professions, in which they will have a great opportunity to make their mark.
She told the inductees to hit the ground running as their time is limited and they should not waste it by living someone else’s life. Prof. Ogunsola also admonished the inductees not to be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking, stating that most importantly they should have the courage to follow their own heart and intuition. She assured the new Physiotherapists that she hoped that College have bred not just academically sound and skillful Physiotherapists but also a crop of women and men of character and integrity; as true professionals who put the needs of their patients before all other considerations. The induction ceremony also featured a lecture titled: Evidence Based Practice in Physiotherapy delivered by Lt. Col. Firopo Tibetan, an alumnus and Head, Rehabilitation Lead, Nigerian Army.
According to him, living the world today is all about evidence-based practice and as it is a global thing, in which everybody is seeking evidence in having the best and every professional should therefore face the reality of evidence-based practice. He added that the goals of evidence based practice in Physiotherapy is to give the best care to the patients; make better plan and evaluate service delivery to reduce healthcare costs.
The highlight of the event was the Oath Taking and presentation of certificates to the Newly Inducted Physiotherapists by the Registrar/CEO, Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board, Mrs. O. T. Akanle that culminated to the Recognition of Excellence and presentation of Awards to the outstanding students by Professor S. R. A. Akinbo, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy. There were six first class graduates among the inductees.
Special awards were presented at the event to Late Professor G.I. Odia (Posthumus Award), Prof. I.O. Owoeye; Prof. S.R.A. Akinbo and Dr. O.A. Olawale for outstanding contributions towards the training of Physiotherapists.
Present at the ceremony were Prof. A. O. Okanlawon, Deputy Provost, Prof. F.EA. Lesi, Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences; Prof. A.T. Ajekigbe, Head, Department of RBRR; Mr. G.K. Ajunwa, Deputy College Secretary (ASU) and many others.
