Communique of the Association of Resident Doctors at the End of the Emergency Executive Council Meeting

COMMUNIQUE OF EMERGENCY EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING OF ARD UNTH HELD TODAY BEING 8/5/18 BY 4PM IN INDEPENDENCE LAYOUT ENUGU
 
The executive council of ARD UNTH had an emergency meeting today with the agendum 'PHYSICAL ASSAULT AND THREAT TO LIFE TO ONE OF OUR MEMBER by a team of striking JOHESU Members'.
 
OBSERVATIONS: 
The EXCO observed that there was an ongoing strike action by some group of staff under the umbrella body JONES. 
 
In the same vein. the EXCO observed that UNTH Ituku Ozalla Enugu is working and doctors of different specialties come to work and offer their medical and surgical services to their patients. 
 
The EXCOs observed that open heart services organized by the management of UNTH is ongoing with laudable progress being made. 
 
That there is palpable security challenges in UNTH Ituku Ozalla due to the unlawful activities of the striking JOHESU MEMBERS. 
 
That the striking JOHESU MEMBERS actually assaulted a female doctor. Member of ARID UNTH, who wanted to gain access to the hospital (UNTH Ituku-Ozalla) to attend to the health needs or her patients. 
 
That the culprit that perpetrated this crime is yet to be apprehended and brought to justice. 
 
Finally, the EXCOs observed that with joint efforts of both MDCAN and ARD UNTH, that the NMA Enugu State has taken over the responsibility of engaging the services of DSS who have commenced action which will be sustained till the strike is over.
 
RESOLUTIONS: 
That the action and unlawful activities of the striking JOHESU Members by open confrontation and assault of Members of staff who come to hospital to carry out their lawful duties is totally condemnable and unacceptable. 
 
That the management of UNTH Ituku-Ozalla should rise up to their responsibility by apprehending the culprits and bringing them to justice with immediate effect. 
 
That protection of life and property and maintenance of law and order should be given utmost importance by the government, represented by management of UNTH Ituku-Ozalla, to guarantee uninterrupted health care services in UNTH ltuku-Ozalla, Enugu. 
 
That services of armed law enforcement agents should be employed with immediate effect to ensure that doctors as well as other health workers who are willing to work go about their normal duties without fear of being beaten up and possibly killed by these rampaging mob. 
 
That the above services of these security agencies be maintained even beyond this period of crises to prevent possible recurrence of such an ugly experience in future. 
 
Lastly, the EXCOs encouraged her Members to go about their lawful duties of patient's care as we hope the management of UNTH does the needful of provision of needed securiry to guarantee safety of life of staff and patients in the hospital.
