Sokoto State Coordinator of the Tuberculosis Network, Dr. Ayuba Dan-Asabe, on Sunday said about 1.5 million people die from tuberculosis infection across the globe annually.
Dan-Asabe disclosed this at a public lecture on good leadership and the effect of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria on the economic development of Nigeria held at Bodinga Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, this annual global toll from the tuberculosis scourge is out of the nine million people who become ill with it, each year.
“In a single day, tuberculosis causes the equivalent in lives lost of 15 jetliner crashes,” he said.
The coordinator described the tuberculosis scourge as the number three cause of death among women of child bearing age. Dan-Asabe said the scourge is the number four cause of death among women of all ages, while more than half a million women die of the disease each year.
He further stated that half a million children become ill with tuberculosis every year, adding that 10 million children worldwide had been orphaned because a parent died from the ailment.
“Since 1995, 46 million people had been successfully treated and up to 6.8 million lives saved through DOTS, a rigorous approach to treatment endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO),” he explained.
In a remark, Executive Coordinator, Centre for Community Participation and Youth Development, Mr. Dennis Utsa, said the event was aimed at sensitising the members of the community on the dangers of the disease and its effect on the society.
