Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Torben Gettermann, says stakeholders working to change mindset can improve the lives and wellbeing of millions of women and girls.
It comes as delegates; youth leaders and civil society groups band to create Deliver for Nigeria, an offshoot of Women Deliver-considered the largest global movement advocating improved lives for women and girls.
Women Deliver’s latest conference in May drew at least 8,000 participants from across 196 countries in Copenhagen to make the Sustainable Development Goals relevant for women.
“Cross cutting topics from the conference shows no country, no person stands alone, and we can do more,” said Gettermann in talks with the Nigerian delegation at the Danish Embassy. “Making the changes is doable. It is a question of changing mindset.” The group has committed to advocate for the 12 Deliver for Good investments to make women’s lives better through advocacy to the federal government, civil society organisations and women groups.
“The idea was conceived prior to the Women Deliver conference in response to the need to ensure Nigeria’s participation is of value to those that matter most,” said Moji Makanjuola, founder of International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH).
ISMPH is to start a new initiative Women for Women’s Health, getting women to help women care for their own health. One plan is to encourage a fund that will pay health care for women in rural areas for whom funding is the major constraint to their seeking health services.
