Dieticians in the country have urged Nigerians to imbibe the culture of balanced diets in their meals saying eating more of fruits and vegetable would go a long way in preventing deadly diseases, especially diabetes.
The dieticians under the auspices of Institute of Dieticians of Nigeria (IDN), in a statement yesterday in Akure, the Ondo State capital said that diabetes is a deadly disease but could be completely prevented if people could stick to eating more balanced diets.
In the statement, the association’s National Secretary, Mr Tajudeen Ahmed said that dieticians are part of the health team that manages the deadly diabetes in the hospitals, explaining that diet is key in diabetes management and dieticians are the most important members of the diabetes health management team.
Ahmed also disclosed that the November 14 of every year is set aside as the commemorative anniversary of diabetes mellitus, globally, adding that it also marks the birthday of Dr. Frederick Banting who was credited with the discovery of the miracle drug known as insulin that is used in diabetes control.
To avoid the deadly disease, the statement urged people to consume less of sugary foods (simple sugars) and instead eat more of complex carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits.
