The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Ogun State Council has flayed some of its branches that are engaged in illegal diversion of dues for personal use.
Immediate past chairman of the union in the state, Comrade Adetola Balogun, in his address at the Quadrangle delegates conference held at the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat, Abeokuta at the weekend, said such illegal diversion and other outstanding dues with branches stood at N17 million.
Balogun, who noted that finance was one of the challenges facing the union, said more could have been achieved if the funds had been remitted into the coffers of the state council.
According to him, “the major challenge of the state council is finance. This is as a result of the non-remittance of the union’s legitimate Check-Off-Dues by most of our pay-points and the greediness of some of our branches who illegally divert the union dues in their custody to private pockets. I reported to the state council executive meeting last week that the outstanding dues with branches stood at N17 million. More could be achieved by the union, especially in the ranking of the state council by the national secretariat if this fund had been remitted into the coffers of the state council.” Balogun noted that the situation called for self examination, stressing that, “if you are elected to represent the union but turn out to be manipulating the process and endangering the survival of the union, it is very unfortunate. It is my humble advice to the incoming executive to ensure the recovery of this our commonwealth from defaulting branches’’.
