The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called for the establishment of a medical services commission to address issues in human resources for health.
The commission, fashioned after the Judicial Service Commission, is expected to serve as a special intervention fund to push investment in health.
President of the NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe gave the suggestions during a parley with the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki in Abuja. He said, when established, the commission’s role would guarantee equity and efficiency as the law establishing the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria did not make provisions for such interventions. It raised concern about imbalanced distribution of health workers, which leaves nearly 65 per cent of Nigerians, mostly in rural areas, without proper access to health workers per population.
NMA also raised issues with the continuous migration of Nigerian doctors and patients abroad, insisting Nigeria lost nearly N1billion year on health tourism.
