Some indigent Nigerians will enjoy free surgeries as “over 1000 general practitioners,” members of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, AGPMPN, arrive Abuja early next month for their Annual General Meeting.
Apart from the surgeries, which the association said would be minor such as swollen appendix, hernia, male circumcision, cleft lip and cleft palate, AGPMPN would brainstorm on major diseases in the country, especially those that are communicable. A statement made available to National Mirror last Monday on behalf of the medical practitioners by Dr Biodun Ogungbo, said the doctors would use the meeting, which the release said doubles as Scientific Conference for the practitioners, to deliberate on the theme of the conference “communicable diseases” and other sub-topics namely malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, cancer screening, and medical missions to Nigeria.
The statement noted that the event would host major players in the nation’s health sector and deliberate on contemporary health challenges in the nation such as Lassa fever. Speaking on malaria and HIV, the release said: “Doctors are being asked to always test for and confirm that a patient has malaria before instituting treatment.
This is vital information and should help reduce the rate of misdiagnosis and delays in treatment currently bedevilling the health space in Nigeria. Almost everything including broken bones and pregnancy is caused by malaria and its twin brother typhoid fever! “With HIV, testing and encouraging young people to check their status is important. Everyone must take charge of their sexual health and avoid dangerous liaisons.”
