As the protests embarked on by workers of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido- Ekiti, FETHI, following death of their colleagues in an accident last week entered the ninth day, the workers’ associations yesterday passed a vote of no confidence on the Chief Medical Director, Dr Lawrence Ayodele.
The various associations accused the management led by the CMD of alleged insensitivity in the handling of the matter of the dead medical doctors and desperation in his second term bid.
The Senior Staff Association chairman, Mr Akinlolu Adetula, and the President of FETHI Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, Dr Austin Ibikunle, who addressed the placard-carrying workers after a meeting of the associations, condemned the media report credited to the CMD that the dead doctors did not get permission before embarking on the trip.
Three doctors from FETHI – Dr Tunde Aladesanmi, Dr Alexander Akinyele and Dr Adeniyi Atolani James – were among the six doctors and a driver that died last week in an accident along Abuja – Kaduna road on their way to Sokoto. The unions noted the alleged “insensitivity and irresponsiveness of the management of FETHI since the occurrence of the accident. Despite being informed, nine days later, the management is yet to release a condolence statement to the bereaved families, neither has the management made any visitation to members of the bereaved families nor were they involved in the burial arrangements.”
The CMD had in media reports said the protest by workers was politically motivated to deny him of another term of office as against genuine concern for the dead doctors.
But in a communiqué approved by the congress of the workers in the institution yesterday at the end of the joint unions/associations’ meeting, the staff called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government “to effect forthwith a change in the leadership of the institution.” The communiqué reads in part: “That the CMD, Dr Ayodele, is becoming rather unprofessional in his bid to achieve his second term bid.
That the activities of the current management led by Dr Ayodele are not in line with the Change Agenda of President Buhari.” The workers consequently resolved that “the entire staff lack confidence in the leadership of the current management led by Dr Ayodele, hence members of staff pass a vote of no confidence in his leadership.”
