Members of the Osun State Association of Medical and Dental Officers have shunned the directive given to them to sign attendance registers opened at state hospitals.
Our correspondent gathered that the Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Mrs. A. Ajayi, held a meeting with heads of various units and opened an attendance register at the ministry, saying that doctors who wanted to continue to work with the state government should begin to sign.
The register was opened on December 21, four days before the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum given to the striking doctors by the state government
The directive, sources told our correspondent, was ignored by the doctors who said they preferred to be sacked than to be coerced into receiving half salaries. The attendance register was later said to be taken to the hospitals for signing when the doctors refused to sign at the ministry. This, it was gathered, further infuriated the doctors, who were said to have started considering suspending the over three-month old strike. The threat that they should sign or consider themselves sacked was said to have made them to be resolute not to sign the register. The state Chairman of OSAMDO, Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, when contacted, confirmed the development to our correspondent on the telephone.
He said doctors refused to sign the register, saying that they were ready to be sacked than to sign. He explained that the government would no longer pay them the balance of their salaries if they allowed themselves to be forced into submission.
He said, “We were asked to be signing a register but no doctor complied with the directive. We will not sign the register and we won’t agree to be receiving half salaries, because there is no half treatment; it is either you treat your patients or you don’t.
“We will resume if they can sign a document stating that they are owing us half salaries and when they would pay. Without that commitment, we won’t suspend the strike.”
The President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osogbo, Dr. Adeyinka Owolabi, also told our correspondent that members of the association held a meeting on Monday and resolved that the strike should continue .
Owolabi said the strike would be sustained because the state government was not ready to accede to their demands.
