Chairman, Interim Management Committee of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Prof. Ndu Eke, has called on the state government to provide its counterpart funding for the operation of the tertiary hospitals’ outreach centre.
Eke, who spoke at the re-opening of the outreach station at Izombe in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, said the centre would not succeed without the state government’s financial and technical support.
He said that the outreach required two 300 KVA generators, two ambulances, two staff buses and laboratory equipment to function effectively.
According to him, the centre had also been equipped with other facilities needed to carry out surgical operations, x-rays and laboratory tests, among other medical services. Eke said that the essence of re-opening the outreach centre was to complement the services of the FMC, which he said, would soon be a University Teaching Hospital for training of specialist doctors.
He said that the medical staff, comprising mainly doctors, at the outreach centre had been constituted, adding that some medical and non-medical staff would come from Oguta Council Area.
Eke asked the community to attract oil companies, corporate bodies and other well-meaning individuals to address the security challenges in the area.
According to him, the centre was shut down in 2014 due to security crises.
“In as much as Nigeria has security challenges, all hands must be on deck to secure this centre from the hands of obnoxious people for it to achieve the goals for which it is being reopened,” Eke added.
