One year after WHO declared Nigeria Ebola-free, the federal government on Tuesday insisted that the country is still under alert and has not lowered its surveillance on the virus.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr Linus Awute, stated this while speaking on the one year anniversary of the achievement last October. He said Nigeria can not afford to celebrate the success of last year pending when "transmission of the disease in human population reaches zero in West Africa."
Awute explained that given the current dicey situation, where the virus could resurge, "Nigeria has not lowered her guard. We remain vigilant through enhance surveillance, not only for Ebola but also all diseases that constitute public health emergencies."
He contended that this vigilance has been "demonstrated by the numerous responses and investigations of the Ebola scare, particularly, the recent one at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
