IMMEDIATE past chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Cross River State, Dr. Callistus Enyuma, has said the Ebola Virus Disease took its toll on the country's health sector, despite successful eradication.
Enyuma specifically said the death of Senior Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, Dr. Stella Adadevoh, and other health practitioners in an attempt to contain the epidemic was a blow to the sector.
He said this in Calabar during the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association, which also witnessed the handing over to the first female NMA chairman in the state, Dr. Offiong Ikpeme.
Enyuma said the association worked with other professionals to contain the EVD, He said, "We were not unmindful of public anxiety during the Ebola scare; but it was also in these gatherings that ideas were incubated and hatched, thus enabling the nation to face the challenges.
"Though Nigeria successfully controlled its spread, it came at a price, notably but not limited to Dr. Stella Adadevoh, an endocrinologist.”
He said the nation owed the late Adadevoh national honour for sacrificing her life.
He noted that despite certain challenges, medical practitioners employed by the Cross River State Government had continued to provide services in the 18 local government areas.
Enyuma disclosed that the state NMA had proposed a 'volunteer service scheme' to government to help transfer knowledge, skill and ultimately good health care through mobilisation of its members.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Angela Oyo-Ita, who represented Governor Liyel Imoke, said government would continue to collaborate with the association to improve health care delivery.
