Determined to return on track the profession of environmental health, the Registrar of the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), Mr Dominic Abonyi has vowed to close illegal environmental health institutions in the country.
In order to achieve this, Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government would be mobilised to disengage the services of persons who are practicing in such places without registration and practice license.
The Registrar promised to stamp out quackery in environmental health profession, adding that the present focus of the Council was to strengthen training regulations in the profession.
He lamented a situation whereby lack of compliance to established laws by practitioners who had not submitted themselves to professional regulations was a big obstacle to environmental health practice in the country, saying “it was difficult to distinguish quacks from professional in the face of non-distinguishing characteristics of certification , registration and licensing. According to him, “colleges of health technologies which do not have Council’s accreditation and approval should desist from further recruiting innocent students as Council will as from January next year deal ruthlessly with erring institutions.”
Abonyi however, revealed that the Council had established corporate practice in the area of waste collection and disposal, Sewage collection, Pest and Vector control, Noise pollution control and Air quality management including Sanitary inspection of premises, adding that early next year, the Council intends to clampdown on Corporate organisations that would be practicing without registration and current permit from the Council.
The Registrar, however advised government and other employers of labour to look out for licensed Environmental Health Officers for employment.
