The Commissioner for Health in Ekiti State, Dr Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, said on Wednesday that the state government was taking concrete steps to end the high rate of maternal and infant mortality in the state.
Yaya-Kolade said training of health professionals was crucial in the move to ensure the reduction in the high maternal mortality rate in the state.
The commissioner said in Ado Ekiti at a training workshop on Maternal and Prenatal Death Surveillance and Response for Ekiti State Steering Committee for Secondary and Tertiary facilities in Ekiti State that training was expedient to curb the high level of maternal mortality rate in the state.
She said, “At present, Nigeria is one of the countries with high maternal mortality ratio in the world, hence, the need for all health professionals to ensure their reduction.”
Yaya-Kolade said the training was an opportunity for health professionals to contribute to the reduction of death of Ekiti women and children.
The chairman of the MPDSR, Dr Sunday Omoya, said the training would discuss ways to reduce maternal and prenatal mortality in various health facilities in the state and Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi, said, “It is our expectation that the implementation of maternal and prenatal death surveillance and response strategies in our health system will improve the quality of health care delivery generally.”
