The drive towards ending the AIDS epidemic should commence from primary health care centres and community levels of local government areas, UNAIDS Country Director, Nigeria, Dr. Bilali Camara has said.
He gave the advice on Saturday during the cultural and awards night organized by the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) in collaboration with the National Agency for Control of AIDs (NACA).
He said this should involve using the local epidemic approach targeting the right locations and the right populations, which will fast-track the response to HIV/AIDS and put Nigeria on its way to end scourge by 2030.
Camara said for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) to play their roles in ending AIDS, it was important that policy makers and political leadership commit and deliver on three essential tasks which include; that domestic funding matches the external funding as Nigeria’s response to HIV/AIDS cannot continue to be sponsored by donor countries, local production of antiretroviral drugs and going to local government levels and achieve impact. National Coordinator of NEPHWAN, Victor Omoshehin said the ceremony was aimed honouring people who have died as a result of lack of access to HIV/Treatment and to individuals and organisations that have supported people with HIV/AIDS since the first reported case in the country in 1987.
