If you are a woman struggling with infertility without any medical explanation, it could be that you have Endometriosis, a disorder in which the tissue that forms the lining of your uterus grows outside of your uterine cavity. This is because Endometriosis happens to be the cause of half of all unexplained infertility, affecting 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, Medical Director Nordica Fertility, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, said. Explaining the condition, The Dr. Ajayi, also the Country Affiliate Partner Representative for Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria (ESGN), said the endometrium tissue can grows on your ovaries, bowel, and tissues lining your pelvis, causing irritation, scar formation, adhesions- in which tissue binds your pelvic organs together, severe pain during your periods and of course fertility problems.
He mentioned that most women suffering from this condition often go through symptoms such as painful periods, pain in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation, cramps one or two weeks around menstruation, heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods, infertility, pain following sexual intercourse, discomfort with bowel movements and lower back pain that may occur at any time during your menstrual cycle.
Unfortunately, the women who have this condition have to live with it for the rest of their life with palliative treatment such as analgestic, he said. However, he explained that surgery or hormonal intervention can also be given, depending on the specialist. For those struggling with infertility, Dr. Ajayi explained that such women can benefit from Invitro Fertilization (IVF). However, the worrying thing about endometriosis in Nigeria is that vast number of women going through this condition are often misdiagnosed by their doctors, he stressed. “In Nigeria, it is probably never diagnosed because of lack of diagnostic equipment known as Laparoscopy. The women are mislabeled and misunderstood, thereby subjecting them to severe pain, inability to work, socialize or maintain a meaningful relationship. Most times, their primary care doctors do not know what it is and the specialists to whom they are sent are not just thinking of it”, he said. Based on this, the Dr. Ajayi, explained that the ESGN will be raising fund to help procure this equipment and also help women affected by the condition. To mark this year’s ‘World Endo Walk’, the ESGN said thy will be having an Endo Walk 2016, tomorrow and also on 5th of March, at Lagos and Abuja respectively.
“Each year, we join our partners all over the world to wear yellow so our sisters, daughter, granddaughters and great granddaughters won’t have to suffer in silence”, Dr. Ajayi, who is the group’s country representative, told newsmen, during a press conference at Nordica Fertility Clinic, on Monday. “We are inviting both private and public sector participants to join us on these great walk. Also, on the 8th of April, we will also be holding a physician’s round table at Civic Centre Lagos, with medical experts from around the world, to discuss endometriosis with our doctors in Nigeria”, he said In addition, Dr. Ajayi said the organization will be having an Endo Gala Nite on the 9th of April, in other to raise fund for increased awareness and help women affected.
Dr. Ajayi said the government can help affected women by training more specialists and doctors. Explaining the theme of this year’s Endo Walk, ‘End the Silence’, he said the only way to demystify the condition and solve the problem is to speak out against the condition. E n d o m e t r i o s i s Awareness takes place across the globe during the month of March with the aim of uniting women and their supporters to take a stand against endometriosis. The condition is said to affects an estimated 176 million women worldwide.
