ONE year after they graduated, the 2014 class, Department of Medical Rehabilitation, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) returned to the school on Wednesday in protest over the school's inability to release their licenses.
The 94 affected former students and members of previous sets alleged that one year after they graduated and were asked to pay N50,000 each for the license, nothing has been heard about it.
They stated that efforts to get attention of management of the school to their plight have proved abortive.
The placard-carrying former students, who stormed the department as early as 8.00 am on Wednesday chanting solidarity songs, said since they graduated, all the institutions they have applied for internship have rejected their application due to non- possession of licenses. Some of the placards read:
"Give us our license. No more academic hostage. We are being stagnated. After collecting N5 million, no license, no induction, no job" among others. .
Spokesperson for the group, Uwaegbonu Ifeanyi, outlined several efforts they made to management address their plight, stressing that nothing tangible had come out of it.
He said: "First of all, we have gone to different authorities to our Head of Department, to the Provost, the Vice Chancellor on three occasions but so far, nobody has given us a positive response concerning our plight
"We heard that our induction has been fixed for March 20th but when we inquired from the Medical Rehabilitation Board, they said it was a lie that nobody has talked to them about- it in the last three months.
"Before now we had gone to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for our internship examination but were not allowed to write it because we don't have license. We went to the Military Hospital in Lagos for the same examination and were turned back over license.
We applied to Federal Medical Centre, OWerri, our applications were rejected.
We went to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and National Hospital, Abuja for Internship but we were rejected. We cannot continue this way".
Ifeanyi said that they had gone in to inquire from the Medical Rehabilitation Therapy Board (MRTB) on why they have refused to induct them and were told that the school had issues with the board.
The issue according to him bothered on the administration of the department He stated that instead of a Physiotherapist as spelt out in the rules, the department is being run by a medical doctor.
He appealed to the Federal Government and all well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid, stressing that "unless something is done, we will be forgotten",
Dean of the faculty, Prof K.K Agwu declined to comment on the matter when contacted by The Guardian.
