Mustapha Umar, a Gastroenterologist at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State, has said that over 20 million Nigerians are infected with hepatitis.

Of this number, Bauchi State has 3.6 million infected people.

Speaking during an interview to mark this year’s Hepatitis Week, Dr Umar said that reports show that over 400 million people are infected with the virus worldwide.

“Children, especially the new born child, are supposed to be vaccinated to prevent contacting the virus,” he said.

“Once they are immunized, their bodies will develop anti-bodies that will fight the disease.”
