A United Kingdom-based surgeon, Dr. Renu Hans, has called on the authorities in Nigeria to implement special health care programmes for the elderly.
She also urged caregivers and other stakeholders to seek the necessary trainings that would enable them to deliver quality care to the aged.
Hans made the appeal at a seminar organised by the Quality Medicare International and Care Companions in Lagos.
The physician, who noted that not every hospital could address all health problems, promised that his organisation would support professionals and other stakeholders interested in the challenges of the elderly ones.
She said,” Longevity comes with its own challenges, such as inability to move around but they are surmountable if one has the right access to good care from skilled persons. There are many medical procedures that elderly people can undergo to improve their quality of life.”
The Executive Director, Quality Medicare International and Director Care Companions Limited , Dr. Abimbola Holloway, who frowned on many Nigerians poor attitude to health challenges, stated that the situation could predispose them to diseases in their old age.
She also identified lack of awareness on the importance of primary health care as a factor responsible for the increasing the burden of terminal diseases.
She, therefore, promised that the organisation would enlighten Nigerians on how preventive medicine.
“We are collaborating with international partners and consultants to improve the health indices in the country and educate Nigerians on healthy lifestyle that would make them live longer.”
