The Nutrition and Dietetics Student's Association, NUDSA, of Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, Ijebu, has concluded its health week, with a charge on students to take their nutrition seriously to stave off ulcer.
Head of Department, NUDSA, Mrs Laide Afolayan , said the underlining factor of every disease was bad nutrition, adding that the high cases of ulcer and asthma among students of the institution informed the decision to call experts to educate the students.
Mrs Yewande Akinhanmi, the Clinical Nutritionist! Dietitian from the State Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, and one of the guest speakers, described ulcer as disease which results from open sores developed in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
She, however, noted that the disease could be properly managed by students by following simple basic guidelines within and outside campuses. On the role students play in the management of. ulcer, the nutritionist said proper understanding on how ulcer was got would go a long way in shaping right attitudes among students, such as maintaining good hygiene practices during food preparation.
She spoke of the need to avon exposure to contaminated wate and soil, staying clear from over crowded rooms/dormitory avoidance of exposed food to flies insects, and reduction OJ consumption of halforimproperf cooked foods.
Mrs. Bolajoko, a dietitian, saic nutrition helped also in the management of asthma, througl the build up of immunity.
Describing asthma as an inflammation of the airways associated with shortness 0f breath, chest tightness, wheezing and coughing, Bolajoko said it could be managed, provided an asthma patient took these measures.
