Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has charged the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to check quacks in the profession, saying they are causing serious damage to the health of people.
He spoke at the National Executive Council meeting of the association which ended in Ado-Ekiti at the weekend.
In a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said the full weight of the law must be visited on quacks jeopardising the health of the people. “We need attitudinal change in our country for us to move forward. A situation where people refuse to perform their civic duties is unacceptable. I enjoin the NMA to as a matter of urgency tackle quacks that are in the profession. The full weight of your laws and ethics must be brought on quacks; they must not go free. You need courage to work successfully as doctors and that courage must be used in getting rid of quacks,” he said.
The governor also challenged the leadership of the country to address the economic situation.
“This country belongs to all of us and we have roles to play so that the country survives. The economy of the country is sick and we must find a way to address the recession. I also challenge you doctors to help in bringing our economy back to life,” he said.
He expressed happiness that the NMA was holding its NEC meeting in the state for the first time during his tenure.
Fayose urged political leaders to learn how to delegate authority. He added that the state government would soon conduct local government election.
In his speech, President of the NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe, said the association would always ensure qualitative health care delivery to the populace.
