There was apprehension in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, over the weekend as no fewer than 75 students of the institution visited the health for the treatment of suspected strange malaria epidemic.
But speaking on the development, the Acting Director, Medical and Health Services of OAU, Dr Adedayo Irinoye, though admitted that some students were sick, he said that there was no outbreak of strange disease as being perceived by the university community.
Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered that students of the university, had, last Friday, raised the alarm that there was 'malaria epidemic' on their campus. Credible source informed Nigerian Tribune that majority of the students that fell sick showed similar symptoms, which included headache, stomach ache, body weakness, irritation, fever, vomiting (in some cases), sore throat and loss of appetite.
When our correspondent visited the health centre on Sunday, some students were brought by their friends to the hospital for treatment, while others were spotted leaving the hospital after receiving treatment.
He said, "If there is any outbreak, we will be the one to first inform the public. Malaria is endemic on the university campus but there is no epidemic. The cause of the student’s sickness is multi-facet. Some are caused due to anxiety over examination coupled with poor nutrition, increase in stress and change of climate.
"We have doubled our manpower and adjusted our roaster to meet the increase in traffic. As we speak, we have not referred anyone to OAU Teaching Hospital. The symptoms are those of malaria and the students get treated before leaving to their hostel in good health. There is nothing strange happening, there is only increase in traffic."
Reacting over the issue, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of OAU, Mr Biodun Olarewaju, said that the situation was not peculiar to the OAU community alone.
He stated, "It is just a kind of reaction to the climate change and it is not peculiar to OAU. We have competent medical doctors and researchers that would have detected if the complaints are not ordinary.
