Female medical graduates of the country’s university colleges of medicine have been encouraged to pursue career in surgical specialties in order to achieve a more sustainable healthcare delivery system in the country.
Professor Kikelomo Osinusi of the Department of Pediatrics, University of Ibadan gave the advise in Ilorin during the 32nd professional initiation and admission ceremony of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ilorin. She said findings have revealed that there was general lack of interest in surgical specialties among female medical doctors, except in gynaecology, paediatrics, family health and family medicine.
Provost of the college, Professor Wahab Rotimi Johnson, said the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ilorin has graduated another set of 55 medical students, making it a total of 4, 212 medical graduates since 1983.
