The ministry of health has launched a national policy for the control of viral hepatitis in the country.

Permanent secretary of the ministry Mr Linus Awute said Nigeria is the first African country to launch the policy document which followed Nigeria’s participation at the Global Partnership Conference on hepatitis in Geneva where a call to action for global hepatitis response was made. He said Nigeria incorporated its national strategic plan (2015 -2019) for the control of viral hepatitis.

The national hepatitis control programme and national technical working group was constituted and they all resulted in the development of the first national policy for viral hepatitis, Awute said.

Former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon said his foundation has been involved in the control of many diseases in the country including guinea worm.
