The federal government is working towards eradicating measles from Nigeria within the next five years.

Minister of health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated this during the flag-off of the national measles follow -up campaign in Abuja.

While stating that measles is one of the top five causes of morbidity and mortality among children under-five in Nigeria, the minister said vaccination has played a key role in reducing child mortality, and achieving progress towards the attainment of Millennium Development Goal 4.

The 2015 National Measles Follow up Campaign is being implemented in northern clusters to end on Wednesday while the southern clusters are scheduled to take off from 28th January-1st February 2016.

Over 39 million children 9-59 months old in the country are targeted for the measles immunisation this year.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, said that the campaign was aimed at administering a booster dose to children already vaccinated, and as an opportunity to reach children that missed being vaccinated in the earlier rounds.

The minister was represented by the acting secretary of health, FCT, Mrs. Odey Achu.
